The latest crime statistics for Atlantic County show that law enforcement agencies recorded 7,870 crimes in 2016. This represents a 12% dip in overall crime rate compared to the previous year and an 18.8% declined compared to the offense total for 2012. A closer look at the 2016 crime numbers indicates that there were 21 murders, 65 rapes, 399 robberies, and 499 aggravated assaults. Incidences of property crimes include 1,337 burglaries, 5,294 larceny-thefts, and 255 motor vehicle thefts.
The year-on-year crime trend for Atlantic County reveals falling robbery (23%), aggravated assault (9%), burglary (7%), and larceny-theft (13%) rates. On the other hand, murder (5%), rape (14%), and motor vehicle theft (13%) rates went up between 2015 and 2016. The five-year crime trend for the county shows that all of these crimes recorded lower incidences in 2016 compared to 2012. In this period, murder (27.6%), rape (12.2%), robbery (16.6%), aggravated assault (25.4%), burglary (26.3%), larceny-theft (16.5%), and motor vehicle theft (12.7%) rates declined in Atlantic County.
Criminal Records
Criminal history records for Atlantic County are available from the New Jersey State Police. This law enforcement agency individuals and employers to request fingerprint-based background checks through IDEMIA, a live scan fingerprinting vendor. When scheduling an appointment by phone, call this line between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. To make an appointment on a Saturday, call between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
The New Jersey State Police provides four different forms for requesting background checks. For a regular criminal history request, download and bring a Form A to the fingerprinting appointment. Bring along a Form B to request a notarized criminal history report. Get a Form C to obtain criminal history records requested by an employer and use Form D if you want the report mailed to the employer.
Each of these forms outlines accepted photo identifications needed to request this service. Come to the appointment with a valid ID and the appropriate fee. The fee for each background check is $42.80. This amount includes vendor (fingerprinting) fee and state sales tax. You can pay with a debit card or one of the major credit cards. Payment with an electronic debit form for debiting a checking account is also accepted.

New Jersey Megan’s Law empowers the State Police with maintaining a centralized database of all registered sex offenders living in every county in the state. It also makes this database available to the public on its website. Visit the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry to find Tier 3 (most likely to re-offend) and Tier 2 (moderate risk) offenders living in Atlantic County. The New Jersey Judiciary allows the public to request copies of Municipal Court records as well as the records of the Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions of the Superior Court. To obtain these records, visit the courthouse where the case was heard. You can also send a completed New Jersey Judiciary Records Request Form to SCCO.Mailbox@njcourts.gov.
The courts charge 5 cents per page for letter size court records and 7 cents per page for legal size ones. There is also a $15 charge for record certification while exemplification costs $50 and triple exemplified records cost $60. Pay in cash when requesting for court records in person. Check and money order are accepted for requests submitted online or by mail. Make these out to Treasurer – State of New Jersey.
Vital Records
The Family Division of the Superior Court maintains all divorce records in Atlantic County. Request for a divorce record like other court records by submitting a completed New Jersey Judiciary Records Request Form by email to SCCO.Mailbox@njcourts.gov. The fee for each Certificate of Divorce is $10. A certified copy of a Final Judgement of Divorce costs $25. Pay these fees in cash when requesting for divorce records in person or with send a check or money order payable to Treasurer – State of New Jersey.
The New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry provides birth, death, and marriage records for all the counties in the state. Its vital records cover the last 100 years. Other available records include domestic partnership records from 2004 and civil union records from 2007 to the present.
Request for these vital records from the state’s Vital Records Online Service. Requesters must provide a government-issued photo ID to verify their identity and scanned copies of required documents like proof of relationship. Credit cards are accepted for copy fee payments.
