Passaic County Arrest, Court, and Public Records

Crime Numbers

Passaic County recorded a total of 10,366 offenses in 2016, the most recent year with a complete set of crime statistics provided by the New Jersey State Police. Compared to the 2012 figure, this represents a 24% decline in overall crime rate within the five-year period. A closer look at the 2017 crime data for Passaic County shows that there were 19 murders, 79 rapes, 861 robberies, and 922 aggravated assaults. The county also recorded 1,690 burglaries, 5,718 larceny thefts, and 1,077 motor vehicle thefts.

The five-year crime trend for Passaic County shows that all crimes experienced declines except for rape. Rape rate grew by 83.7% mostly due to the expanded definition of the crime in the years between 2012 and 2016. In the same period, murder, robbery, and aggravated assault rates dipped by 34.5%, 28.9%, and 20% respectively. Burglary rate fell by 45.4% while larceny theft rate shrank by 14.9% and there were 22.7% fewer cases of motor vehicle theft.

Criminal Records

The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office does not provide criminal background checks. These criminal justice records are available from the State Police and the various police departments of the boroughs, cities, and townships of Passaic County. Police departments in the various municipalities of the county also provide crime and accident reports for events that occurred within their jurisdictions. For example, to obtain such reports for the City of Passaic, contacts the Records Bureau of the Passaic Police Department at 330 Passaic Street, Passaic. The Records Bureau opens to the public from Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. You may also contact the office by calling (973) 365-3910. The New Jersey State Police provides information about registered sex offenders living in Passaic County. The Attorney General empowers the State Police to provide public access to information about all Tier 3 (most likely to re-offend) and some Tier 2 (moderate risk) registered sex offenders living anywhere in the state. Search the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry to find the location and other identifying information about offenders in Passaic County. You can search the database by name, email address, city, zip code, and street address.

The Passaic County Jail is located at 11 Marshall Street, Paterson, NJ. Operated by the Sheriff’s Office, it has an inmate population that is over 1,200. In New Jersey, Surrogate’s Courts have limited jurisdiction and are only involved in the probate of Wills, appointment of administrators for estates without wills, and reviewing and certifying adoption papers and proceedings.

To request for the records of the Superior Court and Municipal Courts in Passaic County, complete the Records Request Form provided by the New Jersey Judiciary System and send it by email to SCCO.Mailbox@njcourts.gov. Available records include civil, criminal, family, and municipal case documents. Requested records can be delivered by email, regular mail, fax, and pick-up.

The New Jersey Judiciary System charges 5 cents per page for letter size pages and 7 cents per page for legal size pages. There is a $10 fee to include a Court Seal on a copy. Certification costs $15 per copy while Exemplification costs $50 plus copy fees. The fee for a Triple Exemplified copy is $60.

Acceptable forms of payment include cash (only for in-person pick-ups), checks, and money orders. Make the checks and money orders payable to Treasurer – State of New Jersey.

Another way to get the records of Passaic County Courts is by visiting the courthouses where those cases were heard.

The Passaic County Clerk is the official responsible for maintaining property records in the county. The County Clerk’s Office collates these records in a searchable online database. Visit the Passaic County Clerk’s Public Records Electronic Search System to access different property records like mortgage documents, deeds, and notices of sale. Refine your search by choosing from the drop-down menu of municipalities in the county.

Vital Records

The Family Division of the Passaic County Superior Court maintains all divorce records for the county. Records for most closed divorce cases are archived at a storage facility in Trenton and in care of the New Jersey Superior Court Clerk. You can request copies of your divorce record from the Superior Court. Simply download and complete a Records Request Form and email it to SCCO.Mailbox@njcourts.gov. If you cannot remember the docket number for the divorce case when filling the form, call the Customer Service Unit of the Clerk’s Office at (609) 421-6100 to find out.

When completing the request form, select a delivery option. Available delivery methods include by fax, email, regular mail, or pick-up. The fee for each certified copy of final judgement of divorce is $35. Pay with a check or money order payable to Treasurer – State of New Jersey.

Residents of Passaic County can obtain certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates from the Office of Vital Statistics and Registry of the New Jersey Department of Health or from their local Vital Statistics Office. To request for these vital records from the state Vital Statistics Office, complete the web form provided at Vital Records Online Service.

The Vital Statistics Office charges $25 for the first copy of a birth, death, marriage, civil union, or domestic partnership certificate. Each additional copy of the same record attracts a charge of $2. Include an additional $5 processing fee when ordering online as well as a $5 fee for identity verification.

The same copy fees apply when ordering from any of the local Vital Statistics offices in Passaic County. Requesters will be required to complete application forms and present valid IDs when obtaining vital records from these offices.
