The annual Uniform Crime Report from New Jersey State Police provides crime data for Bergen County. This report reveals that the county recorded a total of 9,930 offenses in 2016. This figure represents a 1% jump in the crime rate compared to the previous year. A closer look at the 2016 crime statistics for Bergen County shows that there were 12 murders, 79 rapes, 209 robberies, and 446 aggravated assaults. Property crimes reported in the same year include 1,454 burglaries, 7,200 larceny-thefts, and 474 motor vehicle thefts. Compared to crime figures for 2015, murder and rape rates dipped by 17% and 19%, respectively, while robbery and assault rates rose by 25% and 5%, respectively. The year-on-year crime trend for Bergen County also indicates that the burglary rate shrank by 23% while the larceny-theft rate grew by five percent, and there were seven percent fewer motor vehicle thefts.
In 2016, local law enforcement agencies arrested seven people for murder in Bergen County. There were also 24 rape arrestees, while 173 and 408 individuals were booked for robbery and aggravated assault, respectively. The 2016 arrest figure for burglary was 364. The Sheriff brought in 31 people for motor vehicle theft and 2,129 for larceny-theft.
