The Somerset County Jail is the designated facility for holding individuals sentenced to custody within the county. The jail primarily has inmates awaiting trial or disposition, individuals convicted by the municipal court for up to 180 days, or by the superior court for up to 364 days. Juvenile Institutional Services

Somerset County youth, ages 12-18, may be detained for juvenile delinquency offenses or as part of their sentencing for up to 60 days. All juveniles arrested are sent to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center in North Brunswick. Youth receiving dispositions that include commitment time of 6 months or more are transferred to the Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC).
